Humidity

  1. Relative humidity is the percentage of moisture air can hold.
  2. It affects transpiration rate. Leaf temperature is slightly higher than the general room temperature, since it continuously losses water.
  3. Relative humidity of around 50-60 percent is most ideal for indoor plants.
  4. For ferns and orchids relative humidity of 80-100 percent is required. If relative humidity is low then frequent irrigation is required.
  5. Keeping the pot inside another moisture retentive container helps to provide a little more humidity to the plant.
  6. Humidity is an important factor for healthy growth of plants which is often messed up in an average home.
  7. Many house plants are originally from moist area and they have arrived home via a green house where high humidity is maintained or a glasshouse where both temperature and humidity are controlled.
  8. Regular mist spraying on the foliage will make up for the humidity in the air.
  9. Plants grown under high humidity do not suffer water stress often encountered in home interiors.
  10. The plants can compensate for the lower humidity conditions in most if the root system is allowed to develop properly.
  11. This may be accomplished by using porous compost to facilitate aeration.
  12. During acclimatization, the root system can be improved by reducing nutrient levels and lengthening the interval of watering. This will harden the foliage and the plants will be less susceptible to low humidity conditions.
  13. Most of the ferns prefer high humidity.
