Lesson 14:Landscape Resources: Water And Climate

Water drainage

  • Proper water drainage of the soil is one of the important factors for growing plants.
  • Some plants require substantial amount of water and do not prefer prolonged water logging.
  • The soil should have proper drainage.
  • The drainage can be improved by addition of organic matter or coarse sand and if necessary by providing underground drainage.
  • Bad drainage in soil restricts the type of plants to be grown. It also affects lawn.
  • If the soil is naturally water retentive, or the water table is high, there is a need to install land drains.
  • These land drains can be either simple trenches filled with free draining material or a more complex interlocking pipe system.
  • To drain efficiently, a hard surface needs a slope of 1:100 (1cm to 1m). In areas of heavy rainfall a steeper slope is needed.
  • Without an adequate fall, surface water will sit and paving will become slippery underfoot.
  • In addition, prolonged contact with water will damage the surface.
