Water is an important element in both natural and man – made landscapes. In case of natural landscape, the landscape designer may have to prepare schemes related to sea coast, lakes, rivers and stream courses and smaller areas of water. In man – made landscape it extends from functional water works such as reservoirs, canals and drainage schemes to purely decorative features such as fountains and similar elements.
Water as a landscape material has its own very special qualities of change, movement and a variation under the play of wind and light which set it apart from all other materials.
It is at times unpredictable in its changes and somewhat difficult to control. Water has a magnetic appeal.
It can add to aesthetic quality, modify temperatures, serve as a buffer between use areas, and direct attention from undesirable views.
Its characteristics are gurgling, rushing, spurting, falling, calm or placid.
Its shape, whether water course or water body also adds value to the landscape
