Thermal shades or window quilts constructed of multiple layers of insulating fabric, of an surrounding a reflective Mylar sheet, are used effectively to control heat loss or gain. They can also either roll or pleat, but require more space at the top o the window when opened because of their high bulk. Thermal shades are mounted in tracks or otherwise attached along the sides of the window frame to prevent air leakage. They can reduce heat loss/ gain by up to nearly 80 percent.
The drawbacks of shades include the fact that, when pulled down, most cut out the light from the top of the window first- and that is the best light, offering the most privacy. Some shades roll from the bottom up, but these may interfere with the operation of the window. Shades also block the breeze may whip around noisily.
