Lesson 1 : Anthropometric Measurements: Techniques And Measurements

Taking lower body measurements

  1. High hip. Measure high hip circumference 3 inches (7.5 cm) below waistline tape. Keep tape parallel to floor.

  2. Hip at fullest part. Measure fullest part of hip, keeping tape parallel to floor; about 7 inches (18 cm) down from waist for girls, young junior/teen, junior petite, miss petite, and hall- size figures, and about 9 inches (23 cm) down from waist for junior, misses, and women’s figures. Mark this point midway between side and center front.

  3. Waist to fullest part of hip. Measure from waistline tape to hip as determined in step 16.

  4. Thigh. Slip tapeline down to largest measure of thighs, keeping tape parallel to floor. Mark this point.

  5. Waist to thigh. Measure distance from waist to thigh as determined in step 18.

  6. Skirt length. Measure from waist to floor at center front, center back, right side, and left side. Subtract the number of inches (cm) skirt is to be worn from floor. To the balance add amount needed for skirt hem.

  7. Pants length. Measure from waistline along side seam to desired length for pants.

  8. Leg circumference. Measure fullest part of (a) thigh, (b) bent knee, (c) calf, and (d) instep.

  9. Crotch depth. Sit erectly on a hard, flat surface. Measure along curve on side of body from waistline tape to flat surface.

  10. Crotch length. Measure total crotch length from waistline, between legs, to back waistline.
