Lesson 12 : Human Relations Management

Human Relations Approach

According to modern conception, human treatment towards labour is advocated to avoid trouble and to advance the enterprise. Yet such treatment need not and should not be of the superior fatherly type; but rather one of mutual co-operation in the solution of common problems. It is important that our employee not only be able to work, but be willing to work as well. This willingness is based largely on management’s ability to integrate the interests and needs of its employees with the objectives of the organization. Such integration is technically termed as what we call ‘Human Relations Approach.’ The following definitions are quite illuminating in this connection:

  1. In the words of Keith Davis, Professor of Management in the School of Business, Indiana University, U.S.A., “Human Relations as an area of management practice is the integration of people into a work situation in a way that motivates them to work together productively, cooperatively and with economic, psychological and social satisfaction.”
