Nature in its myriad manifestations has been a source of inspiration for human kind since the beginning of time. One can learn many design aspects by keenly observing nature – from color harmony to tactile quality and everything in between. Considering no two leaves or snowflakes look alike, imagine what kind of treasures lay under every unturned stone! As a student of fashion, one must be very observant and react to the environment around us. One of the easiest ways to do this is to keep a digital camera handy and keep clicking everything that interests you. If this is not feasible, then carry a drawing pad and sketch out your objects of interest.
Apart from observing the objects, one must train their mind to study and analyze the objects. For example, when you see a tomato, observe the shape. Try and sketch it from different angles. See how it forms a sphere but still has some puffiness to it.
Next analyze the color. Try and mix paints to get the exact red. Observe how much red, yellow, green you have to mix to get the exact shade. Try it out with color pencils, crayons, pastels, etc. Also analyze how much percentage of each color it takes to achieve the correct shade. Now, use this palette in different proportions and see what difference it makes.
