Lesson 03: Design Process

Role of a Fashion Designer

Role of a Fashion Designer: Designers attempt to satisfy consumer desire for aesthetically designed clothing; and, because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, must at times anticipate changing consumer tastes. That’s why it is important for them to understand the upcoming trends. Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. This is what distinguishes them from artists who may not necessarily take consumer’s taste into account. They must consider who is likely to wear their garment and the situations in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear falls within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for special occasions, such as evening wear or party dresses. Within the everyday casual wear, there are a lot of patrons of fashion who look for some new twist or slight variation in every style. It is up to the designer to recognize this need and satisfy the end consumer.

Responsibilities of a Fashion Designer: As a designer, it is your primary concern to satisfy the end consumer, be it a brand or an individual client. Apart from this, it is important for a designer to follow the trends, bring out new and innovative styles every season and be creative. While innovating your own signature style, it is important to keep the client happy. As a part of our work ethic, we must also be socially responsible in terms of the fabrics and other materials we use and the kind of labor we source.

Career Opportunities: Being in a creative industry, there is a lot of freedom to design a career that best suits you. Designers can choose to work in groups or as an individual enterprise. They can also choose to be a part of a bigger enterprise and design for bigger brands. In choosing this line of work, they can also choose to do haute couture or prêt lines. Or ethnic clothes versus western clothes. It is important for a designer to recognize his or her signature style and present it to the fashion market. Designers can also choose to work part time or as free lancers. They can also be self employed and design for specific clients or choose to float a new label. They also work in buying houses and present their collections to different buyers. They can also choose to be illustrators or be in a factory set up where they can take care of the assembly lines and technical drawings. They can also design clothes for movies, television or advertising agencies. They can also specialize in designing uniforms. If one is interested in academia, teaching at a fashion school is also an option.
