Line Variety and Line Quality

Line is defined in many different ways. But a line is basically a mark made on a surface which is a series of joining dots. For illustration, it is important to master the art of drawing different lines. Line diversity starts with pressure and release. Pressure on the pen gives your line its force and intensity. Releasing as you draw gives your line spontaneity and momentum. Together they ass visual energy to your rendering, so it won’t look static, traced and lifeless. Try and practice different types of lines with just one type of marker or a pen. Line variety can be influenced by verbal connection. Words can add action to your line drawing. Words can inspire and direct you lines. Try some of the following:

  • Frilly - fringe, feathers, tassels
  • Intricate – wicker, lace, embroidery
  • Linear – brickwork, lattice, stripes
  • Nubby – carpet, knits, terrycloth
  • Raised – quilting, tapestry, beading
  • Smooth – Porcelain, glass, vinyl
  • Sparkle – metallics, sequins, jewelry
  • Striated – marble, granite, wood grain
  • Textured – faux fur, wooly tweeds
