Characteristics

  • Fabrics are reversible unless the surface is finished.
  • Surface is plain, smooth and receptive to finishes like embossed, puckered and glazed finishes.
  • They wrinkle more, ravel less, wear well and are less absorbent due to more number of interlacings per square inch.
  • Differently woven structures or interesting surface designs can be created by the use of different sizes, colours & twist of yarns and by use of novel or textured yarns.

  • In its simplest form, plain weave is called balanced weave. Warp and filling are of same size, same distance and are shown in equal quantity on the face of cloth (right side) or back of cloth (wrong side).
  • Unbalanced plain weave - one set of yarns when present in greater quantity than the other in a fabric, it is termed as Unbalanced Plain Weave.
