Lesson 26: Synthetic Dyes

Synthetic dyes

Synthetic dyes though discovered in 1856, they were not developed until World War I. As lasting beauty of color is an important factor in consumers' finished goods they have replaced natural dyes which are fugitive colours.

Durability of color is a key factor in dyeing and it depends on
(1) Selection of the proper dye for the fiber to be dyed,
(2) Selection of the method of dyeing the fiber, yarn, or fabric.

Most synthetic dyes used today are categorized according to their chemical composition. The most widely used system for classifying dyes is developed by the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) and the American Associations of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC).
