Lesson 26: Synthetic Dyes

Azoic or Naphthol Dyes

Azoic dyes are used on natural and manmade cellulosic fibers and silk. They produce brilliant shades of red, yellow, orange and burgundy. These dyes are applied in two steps. These dyes are sometimes referred to as "ice" colors because they are applied from a low temperature bath. Azoic dyestuffs produce brilliant colors at relatively low cost. They exhibit good colorfastness to laundering, bleaching, alkalies and light. The major problem in colorfastness is a tendency for dyes to "crock" or rub off onto other fabric.
