Production Authorization

Many apparel companies must commit to production before meaningful sales have been generated, someone must decide what and how much to man­ufacture. In 41 percent of the companies surveyed the mer­chandiser is directly responsible for production authorization. Merchandisers use past sales histories, current market research, advance sales advice, and sales forecasting models to make production authorization commitments. Unfortu­nately, there are no magic crystal ball forecasting models that can zero in on the exact styles by sizes and colors that will be sold in any given season.
