Traits of a Merchandiser

In today's high-tech, competitive, global apparel industry; a merchandiser must possess a rare blend of traits, skills, and experience. He or she must be part designer, part engineer, part computer expert, part marketer, part busi­ness management guru, and part entrepreneur.

In addition to experience, a successful merchandising candidate should be:

  • An independent thinker with the ability to maintain a steady course toward the long-term company objectives while under pressure from sales, marketing, and manufacturing requirements.
  • An entrepreneur by being assertive in leading the company in new di­rections while taking risks based upon an innate feel for the market
  • Flexible with the ability to adjust to the changing demands and time­ tables of the marketplace.
  • A leader demonstrating the ability to gain the respect and cooperation of other members of the management team while making the critical decisions needed to keep the company ahead of the competition.
  • A communicator with the ability to express new ideas and concepts clearly and persuasively and also being capable of convincing the de­ sign staff to translate subtle styling indicators into firm style trends.
  • Dedicated with a focused commitment on maintaining a clear vision of the company's target market and styling direction.
  • Organized, exhibiting the ability to maintain a disciplined business atmosphere while managing many functions simultaneously and meet­ing critical deadlines.
