Lesson 44 : Characteristics of Innovation with Special Reference to Homestead Technologies

Technology

Technology for rural areas may be defined as “low cost need based technology for rural areas which is most appropriate and suitable to the environment, culture and application it is intended to support.” This would include a technology package, which must be technically feasible, economically viable, socially acceptable, environment friendly, consistent with household endowment and relevant to the needs of rural people.

Home technology generally means a technical method of achieving a practical purpose and therefore the word technology can be interpreted as application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Technology should be understood not only as a device but as a blend of skills, methods, techniques, appliances and equipments that can contribute towards solving the basic socio-economic problems of the concerned communities.

In this context the home stead technologies can be viewed as a complex blend of scientific information, materials, technical methods and processes that require the art of systematically using them for improving skill and task performance in occupational or daily routine.

The household technologies usually have two components, namely, the hardware aspect that consists of tools or materials as physical objects like peeler, pressure cooker, grain storage bin etc and the software aspect that consists of information base for the hardware aspect regarding its use, availability, cost, maintenance etc. Both these aspects play complimentary role in transferring homestead technologies to rural women.
