Difference between bitmap and vector

Lesson 12: Multimedia Building Blocks – Graphics

Difference between bitmap and vector

  • Vector images use less memory space and have a smaller file size as compared to bitmaps.
  • For the Web, pages that use vector graphics in plug-ins download faster, and when used for animation, draw faster than bitmaps.
  • Vector images cannot be used for photorealistic images.
  • Vector images require a plug-in for Web-based display.

  • An example of vector graphic is the clipart in MS PowerPoint
  • When you enlarge a clipart image, it will not distort

  • Bitmaps are not easily scalable and resizable.
  • Resolution: Determines how sharply the image is represented. It is expressed in dot per inch (dpi), or simply by the number of rows and columns, such as 640 by 480
  • Bitmap graphics suffer distortion in image quality when being scaled up, this does not happen in case of vector graphics.

  • Bitmaps can be converted to vector images using auto tracing.

Graphic file formats

Difference between bitmap and vector

Graphics Interchange
Format

.gif

Older image format , good compression for small- or medium-sized files usually <= 256 different colors , widely used on the Internet for images that have only a few distinct colors like line drawings, cartoons, simple icons, and screen objects

Joint Photographic
Experts Group (JPEG)

.jpg

Newer file format , >= 16 million colors , good for photographs and continuous-tone art images that do not have sharp edges . JPEG file compression is lossy which erases some elements of the graphic. The greater the level of compression , the more graphic detail is lost

BitMaPped graphic

.bmp

Standard, non-compressed bit-mapped graphics format used in the Windows. Bitmap images, also called raster images, use a grid (the bitmap or raster) of small squares known as pixels to represent images. Each pixel is assigned a specific location and color value.

ile Format

.tif
Or
.tiff

One of the most widely supported lossless (does not lose information during compression) file formats for storing bit-mapped images (both PCs and Macintosh computers). TIFF graphics can be any resolution, in black and white, gray-scaled or color.

Portable Network
G
raphics

.png

A new bit-mapped graphics format similar to GIF. Approved as a standard by the WWW consortium to replace GIF because GIF uses a patented data. In contrast, PNG is completely patent- and
license-free. Only the most recent versions of Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer now support PNG.

Photo Shop Document

.psd

While editing, the image can be saved as psd file which allow the designer to re-edit using layers.
