Lesson 6:Training vs education

Differences between training and education

Though behavioral change through change in knowledge, skill and attitude are end products of both training and education, they differ from each other in the following respects.

Training

Education

It is acquisition of knowledge, skills or attitudes needed specifically for a particular job.

Ex: Training Anganwadi workers in thematic approach for effective handling of preschool sessions

It is all sorts of acquisition Knowledge and skill with or for performing without a pre-specified purpose or job to be performed.

Ex: Dept of HDFS offers a course in Preschool management

Training is directed towards an individual’s job proficiency.

Ex: Bank cashier is trained in online accounting system.

Education is mainly concerned with personal development

Ex: CAD in Interior and exterior design is essential course for students of RMCS

Training is need based, problem centered and skill oriented for immediate practical application.

Ex: Presiding Officers of Loksabha elections are trained in operating Electronic Voting Machine for smooth conduct of polling.

Education is general learning with no immediate practical application

Ex: Students of political science are taught Election policy of India

Training syllabus is according to the needs, resources and potential of the target group which is flexible in nature

Ex:: Anganwadi Workers are trained in organizing preschool activities through thematic approach and Supervisors on monitoring indicators of thematic approach

Education has fixed, structures syllabus and schedule.

Ex: All the College of Agriculture ANGRAU follow the syllabus structured and approved by the academic council

Training programme is of shorter duration, diverse and has a variety

Ex: College of Home Science organizes the following training programmes for their clientele
Slimming diets- 6 days
Flower arrangements for different occasions- 6 days
Preprimary Teacher Training- 45 days
Video and Audio editing- 45 days

Emphasis is proportionately higher on use of lecture method as compared to practical experience.

Ex: Dept of FDNT offers Health food production of 4 credit course (0+4)

Learning is assured through adoption of practice and not by marks or grades

Ex: Dept of HECM organized training programme to Social activist on PRA tools to find out the needs of their clientele

Learning is assessed by grades and marks through evaluation

Ex: Minimum Grade point for the students to declare that they passed in a particular course is 5.0

Goal setting is for short term with long term applicability for sustainability.

Ex: Application of Adobe photo shop software in photo printing.

Goal setting is for long term achievement for life long experience.

Ex: Completion of UG or PG programme.

It can be concluded that education is a broad based planned programme by a team of experts keeping in view the wider perspective of human development. In contrast training is planned by the trainer and training institution in accordance with the request of working organizations, which always have achievement orientation.
