Procedure

  • Collect fish specimen from the commercial landing centre, fish market or using fish net.
  • Bring them to the laboratory.
  • Wash them with fresh water to remove the dirt, sand particles and mucus.
  • Observe the variation in morphological character.
  • Observe
  • Body shape- flat, spindle, laterally compressed, dorsoventrally flattened, fusiform, cylindrical, eel like,
    • Head: Observe size and shape of the head.
    • Mouth location: Superior, inferior, terminal, subterminal, protrusible
    • Eyes: Location of the eye- top, middle or bottom: adipose eye lid presence
    • Fins: Observe presence or absence of fins. Observe shape and number of fins, fin let, adipose fin,
    • Caudal fin shape, forked,rounded, emerginate, truncate, lunate, pointed, pointer and separate from the dorsal, Long first dorsal, short first dorsal followed by
    • Barbells:
    •  Locate operculum and find out the shape.
    • spine length,
    • Observe the type of Scale
    • Examine the presence of lateral line
    • Find out the teeth pattern- villiform, incisor, canine and molar
  • Compare the character among them.
  • Draw a neat diagram.
  • Record your observation.
