Various types of mouth
The structure of mouth is one of the importance morphometric characters use to identify the fish. These are various types of mouth reported in fishes, viz., Terminal mouth, sub terminal mouth, interior mouth, superior mouth and protrusible mouth. Terminal Mouth Both the jaws are equal in terminal mouth. The mouth is located in the middle of the head region. Sub Terminal Mouth The upper jaw is slightly projected in sub terminal mouth. Inferior Mouth The upper jaw is well projected in fishes which are having inferior mouth. This fishes usually feed the bottom living organism. Superior Mouth The lower jaw is well projected in the fishes which are bearing the superior mouth. Protrusible Mouth Some fishes have protrusible mouth were the jaws are either extended are retracted back. |
