Introduction
Successful hatchery seed production largely depends on the perfect location of the hatchery. Before locating the hacthery it is essential to study the physical, chemical, biological and social parameters of the site so as to minimise the risks.
A site identified for the establishment of the hatchery should be thoroughly screened for various parameters in order to assess the usefulness of the site for the particular species. The supply of various raw materials needed for the hatchery opreation needs to be looked into along with their quality and quantity aspects. The social problems that can influence the hatchery process also need to be identified.
The following chapters deal with the criteria for the site selection and their limiting factors for the shellfish hatcheries
