Characteristics of postlarvae of Penaeus indicus

Objective : To familiarize with the identification characters of early postlarvae of  Penaeus indicus

Procedure

 The points given below are pertaining to Paneaus indicus.  They can be followed  to identify the postlarval stages of Penaeus indicus.

  • Body white and transparent, except pink telson and tip of rostrum.
  • Rostrum with 1-2 dorsal spine and single dorsal tooth extending beyond eye.
  • Total length 5-10 mm. Yellowish eye stalk.
  • Few mid abdominal segments.
  • Telson with few branched brownish-yellow chromatophores.
  • Eye stalk yellowish.

Significance:

Identification of different postlarval stages is of much importance in  postlarval production and management.
