Principle

PRINCIPLE

  • Motility of the bacteria is mediated by special structures called flagella. Bacterial movement is a simple one.
  • It occurs as a result of rotation of flagella in the way the shaft in electrical motor rotates.
  • Bacteria normally move by run or swim and change direction by tumbling. Bacteria are observed for motility by different methods. One of the methods is hanging drop method. In this method a liquid medium containing bacteria is observed under microscope.
  • The other methods to study bacterial motility are darkfield microscopy and growing in semisolid medium by stab method of inoculation.
