Attenuated (Modified) live virus (MLV) vaccines

ATTENUATED (MODIFIED) LIVE VIRUS (MLV) VACCINES

  • Virus with reduced virulence
  • Excellent immunogenecity
  • Widely used
  • Eg. NDV-B1

Advantages of Attenuated Vaccines

  • Self-replicating
  • Authentic antigen presentation
  • Activates all phases of immune system
  • More durable immunity; more cross-reactive
  • Low cost and Easy administration

Disadvantages of MLV vaccines

  • Potential for reassortment of recombination, reversion to virulent virus
  • Lack of vaccine markers
  • Development of persistent infection
  • Poor stability
  • Replication interference between viruses in multivalent vaccines
  • Viruses with antigenic drift
