POULTRY CARCASSES

Poultry carcasses should be properly and quickly managed as they are a significant source of disease and odours, and can attract vectors. Recommended measures for the management and disposal of poultry carcasses include the following:

  • Reduce mortalities through proper animal care and disease prevention
  • Collect carcasses on a regular basis to prevent putrefaction
  • Compost only disease-free carcasses and ensure that the composting process is managed to prevent leachate and odours
  • Rendering or incineration can be carried out depending on the cause of fatality
  • Burial area should be accessible to earth moving machinery and be designed and located so as to avoid contamination by vapours or leach ate from buried, decaying carcasses; Open burning should be avoided
