Air emissions

AIR EMISSIONS

  • Air emissions from poultry production include primarily ammonia, odours and dust. Effective waste management, as described above, is critical to minimize emissions of air pollutants.
  • Adopt proper management practices to adjust temperature, ventilation rate, humidity, stocking density, litter quality, and feed composition (crude protein) to minimize ammonia excretion from poultry houses.
  • Ammonia gas (NH3) has a sharp and pungent odor and can act as an irritant when present in elevated concentrations.
  • Dust can reduce visibility, cause respiratory problems, and facilitate transport of odours and diseases.
  • Measures recommended to minimize dust generation include installation of dust collection systems, implementation of fugitive dust-control measures, ensuring the prevention of bio-aerosols emissions, which may contain disease-causing agents etc.
