ANABOLIC STEROIDS

  • Compounds structurally related to testosterone but possessing protein anabolic activity with minimal androgenic activity are called anabolic steroids.
  • These drugs are used mainly in therapeutically debilitated animals.
  • The metabolic activities include
    • Protein anabolism with positive nitrogen balance
    • Increased muscle mass due to increased protein and glycogen content
    • High retention of calcium and phosphorus.
  • Drugs used are nandrolone and stanozalol.
  • Anti androgens like delmadinone acetate are used to control hypersexuality in dogs and cats, relieve prostate hypertrophy, tumours and behavioral problems in dogs and cats.
