MORTAR AND PESTLE

• Mortar and pestle are meant for pulverization, trituration and pounding of ingredients to make suspensions, solutions or ointments.
• Different types of mortar and pestle are available.
• They include porcelain mortar and pestle, glass mortar and pestle and metal mortar and pestle.
• In the porcelain mortar and pestle the handle of the pestle is made of wood.
• In the glass mortar and pestle both the mortar and pestle are made of glass.
• The glass mortar and pestle is meant for preparing solutions, suspensions and also be used for preparing ointments which leave stain.
• Pounding cannot be done using glass mortar and pestle. The pestle is used for mixing by means of rotary motion.
• The metal mortar and pestle made of brass or cast-iron is used for pounding and powdering hard substances.
