Prescription writing- guidelines

GUIDELINES ON WRITING A PRESCRIPTION 

  • A prescription should be
    • Clear neat and legible
    • Free from errors
    • Each ingredient should have separate line
    • Each line shall begin with a capital letter.
    • Abbreviations and chemical symbols should not be used.
    • If a prescription contain both solid and liquid drug solids should be written first.
    • Names of ingredients should be written first and vehicle last.
    • Latin terms and abbreviations should not be use in prescriptions. But if there is any doubt it is better to write in English.
    • When writing more than ordinary dose underline the quantity essential so that pharmacist will understand that the larger dose is prescribed intentionally.
    • Simple and clear direction must be given without any abbreviations.
