FUNCTIONS OF INSTITUTIONS

  • Institutions define institutional behaviour and attitudes.
  • Roles, statuses and other forms of social relations are prescribed and defined. e.g. How a teacher and students to behave in a school?
  • Institutions serve to provide coordination and stability to culture and give sense of security to the individual not only in terms of the present but also of the future.
  • Institutions serve as mechanisms of social control and exert pressure for conformity on individuals in society in various ways.
  • Institutions sometime perform negative functions , which include:
    • Institutions may stand as obstructions in the path of progress.
    • Conserve social values, which may be inconsistent with the actual behaviour of people.
