Introduction

HYDROLOGICAL PARAMETERS

AIM: To estimate the important hydrobiological parameters of fish ponds.

  • The relationship between water quality and fish culture is intrinsic. Water quality of an aquaculture system is assessed based on its physical, chemical and biological factors. Water quality is defined as the suitability of water for the survival and growth of fish. As the variations in physico-chemical and biological factors are known to play a vital role in the culture of fishes, determination and monitoring of their levels assumes greater significance.
  • The various physical and chemical parameters that have to be monitored in an aquaculture system are:
      • Temperature
      • Light penetration
      • Total dissolved solids and suspended solids
    • Chemical parameters
      • pH
      • Salinity
      • Dissolved oxygen
      • Hardness
      • Nitrite
      • Ammonia
