TREATMENT 

• The rationale approach to terminate unwanted pregnancy would be to start treatment after confirmation of pregnancy at 25- to 30 days either by abdominal palpation or ultrasonography.
• The initiation of treatment bfore confirmation of prgnany would lead to non- pregnant bitches being inadverently treated because 40% of mismated bitches are non-Pregnant. The common practice of administering estrogen should be avoided because it is not 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and is accompanied by side effects

PGF2 alpha

• Natural -Dose 0.01 to 0.02 mg /kg body weight twice daily for 7 to 9 days or until termination
• synthetic - Dose 10 micro grams/ kgbody weight once daily for 7 to 9 days or until termination
• prostaglandin administration is accompanied by severe side effects like vomition, salivation,panting, diaorrhea and some times prostration. these side effects can be minimised by administration of atrophine sulphate @ 0.01mg/kg body weight prior to prostaglandin treatment.

Dopamine agonoist

• Bromocriptine -Dose 30 -100 micro grams/Kg body weight B.I.D daily for 7 to 9 days or until termination
• Cabergoline -Dose - 5 micro gram/Kg body weight B.I.D daily for 6 to 8 days or until termination
• Dopamine administration is also accompanied by side effects like severe vomition.The side effects are comparatively less with cabergoline than Bromocriptine.
• cabergoline is more preferred than bromocriptine because it is long acting ,with specific action on D2 receptors.

The drug of choice for medical termination would be Mifipristone because of

• Minimum number of days required for termination of pregnancy
• Minimal side effect when compared to other abortifacients.
• Mifipristone -Dose 2.5 mg/Kg body weight B.I.D.daily for 4 to 5 days.
• (Tab-Mifeprin 200mg)
