Cytologic Evaluation

CYTOLOGIC EVALUATION

  • Total cell count on unconcentrated fluid should be done.
  • Two methods are used for slide preparation.
    • Cytocentrifugation
    • Sedimentation method
  • Since CSF undergoes degeneration rapidly, WBCS degrade more rapidly than RBCs in CSF. Hence CSF should be kept under refrigeration. Cell count is increased in inflammation, tumours, necrosis, vascular injuries. CSF cytology is reliable in acute, untreated CNS infections and not so useful in chronic condition.
