Introduction

INTRODUCTION

  • The ESR is increased due to alteration in the suspension stability as a result of physico-chemical and electrical changes on the surface of RBC in disease condition.
  • When the cells clump and take part in rouleaux formation the sedimentation rate increases. Increase in plasma fibrinogen and globulin causes rouleaux formation.
  • The ESR is a non-specific reaction, which is useful in evaluating the response to inflammatory and necrotic processes.  It is expressed in mm/30 and 60 minutes.
