PRINCIPLE

  • Blood to which an anticoagulant has been added is allowed to stand in a tube vertically. Erythrocytes sink, as they are heavier than plasma. 
  • The rate at which it sediments is the ESR and the distance the erythrocytes fall during a given period of time is measured in millimeter.
