PRESERVATION

  • After collection and sealing, store the specimens in a refrigerator or deep freeze while awaiting dispatch to the laboratory. If it can be avoided, it is better not to add any preservative. Prefer to send samples on ice as freezing is the safest preservative. In the warm seasons, take the specimens to the laboratory as soon as possible. But many times when the weather and the distance to the laboratory make this impossible, add some preservative. It is best to use alcohol (95% ethanol, 1 ml/g of sample) as it is rarely met with a poison in veterinary toxicology.
