Lesson 18 : Feed Mechanism

Differential Feed

The action of this feed system is capable of having very fine adjustments between the top & bottom feeds. This is a feed system on lock stitch, chain stitch, over edge and safety stitch machines. Safety stitch machines may be accompanied by a blade ruffler. These feed dogs can be set to move in unison or at differing movement ratios, to provide either gathering of the materials, or stretching of the materials being sewn. This feed consists of 2 sections, one behind the other. The movement of each section is similar to that of individual drop feed but the stroke of movement of each part can be adjusted separately or differentially. It can be used on slippery fabrics where fullness has to be created either on the top or bottom ply. Stitch formation takes place whilst the feed dog is below the needle plate and the materials are stationary.

This feed system can be used for well in shirring, where the lower ply of material is gathered in relation to the upper ply. To do this a shirring blade is inserted, covering the differential feed dog, between the plies of material and the feed dog ratio is set to gather.
