Compound Feed

APPAREL MANUFACTURING – II 3(3+0)

Lesson 18 : Feed Mechanism

Compound Feed

The feed in which the needle itself moves forwards and backwards. In the compound feeding system both the needle and the feed dog move in sync, feeding the materials, one stitch length at a time. The needle is at the bottom of its stroke, thereby holding the plies of material as they are sewn to make the stitch. It tends to produce elongated needle holes in the fabric and to avoid this it is normally combined with a drop feed and thus given the name compound feed. It is useful in bulky sewing such as quilting and wading. The combined needle & feed dog movement ensures that plies do not shift out of alignment while sewing.

Stitch formation takes place whilst the feed dog is above the needle plate and the materials are being fed.
