Lesson 18 : Feed Mechanism

Feed Dogs

These move the material forward a pre-determined distance to allow successive penetrations of the needle. The stitch regulator fitted to machine controls the distance the work travels between each penetration, and this distance is called stitch length.

Sometimes two or more of the prime feeds are combined to give a multi feed action. The most common in the drop oscillations feeds are:

  1. Drop Feed

  2. Differential feeds- series and parallel types

  3. Compound feed- unit drop oscillation plus a needle feed

  4. Unison feed- unit drop oscillation plus needle feed plus foot feed

  5. Walking foot feed- unit drop oscillation plus set direction foot feed.
