2.1.3 Mendel's explanation
1. Law of segregation or law of purity of gametes states that "during the formation of gametes the 2 alleles responsible for a trait separate from each other. Alleles for a trait are then recombined at fertilization, providing the genotype for the traits of the offspring". Law of segregation has universal application and occur both in plants and animals. To formulate this law Mendel considered monohybrid cross and noted the behaviour of a single pair of traits and single pair of alleles of a gene at a time. |
