Lesson 10 : Emotional development during late childhood

Introduction

When a child enters late childhood, he gradually discovers that violent expressions of especially the unpleasant are unacceptable. He tries to make his emotional expressions pleasant. However all emotional expressions at this stage are not pleasant. Outbursts of temper do occur and the child suffers from anxiety and feelings of frustration. Girls often dissolve into tears or temper outbursts. Boys express their annoyance or anxiety by being sullen and moody.

The common emotions of late childhood differ from those of early childhood in two respects
    • The type of situation that gives rise to the emotions.
    • The form of expression. These changes are the result of broadened experience and learning rather than maturation. They help the child to discover how different people feel about different emotional expressions.
