Lesson 1 : Design: Types and Its Aspects

Aspects of design

The beauty of the garment becomes useless if it pinches when worn, hampers partially or completely the body movement of the wearer, has uncomfortable binding and do not serve the purpose desired as per the end use. Such a garment can persuade the person to purchase it but after its use it will be pushed back in to ones wardrobe as non wearable component. A garment, to be a helpful item for the owner, has to be well designed and must possess following three aspects:

  1. Function
  2. Structure
  3. Decoration

A garment that entails blending of these three aspects amiably where one aspect relates to the other two aspects and balances each other satisfactorily is called well designed garment that appears and performs effectively. The purpose of the garment must be seen as separate aspect from its functional, structural and decorative design still it may have a basis for existence in any or all of three aspects. For example, the main purpose of a garment may be for appearance but still it must have a proper fit and have to perform suitably since the appearance can’t balance for the lack of function and structure in a garment.
