Mass communication is for large & heterogeneous audience. It is public, rapid & transient. Mass communication is characterized by communication between a single or panel of communicators and large sized, heterogeneous, anonymous audience. It is most indirect and impersonal of all types of communication. It requires some kind of mechanical device to transmit the messages. Any mechanical device that multiplies messages and takes them to a large number of people simultaneously is called as mass media. Mass media are the tools or technologies that facilitate disseminating of information and entertainment to a vast number of consumers. These tools ‘mediate’ the messages; they are not messengers by themselves. Ex: Cinema, Radio, Television, Press, Cable, Cellular phones, Internet etc.
Definition: Mass media is defined as forms, means or channels through which it is possible to transmit identical information to a large number of people at different places.
