Lesson 1: Mass Communication

Need for Mass communication

Mass communication plays an important role in the development of our nation. Societies cannot change and develop without mass communication. It is a process of social interaction through which people are influenced by ideas, attitudes, knowledge, opinion and behavior of each other. It is through the process of mass communication that people are made aware of the nature and objectives of the programmers. This helps masses in acquiring new knowledge required for coping with fast changing society. It helps people in adoption of innovations for the improvement of their practices, methods and quality of life.
Mass communication is a powerful instrument in integrating diversified society like India. It can create change and progress. Communication by itself does not produce development but it should be designed or tailored to fit the various development projects.
Mass communication is very important for development planners, practitioners, industrialists, business people, scientists, farmers and every layman. Through mass communication economic, social, educational and technological awareness can be created with lesser time. It means that the advancement of the country lies in the effectiveness of its communication system at every level.
After developmental transformation in India, mass communication has become development supportive, flexible & need based especially in the areas like health, nutrition, family welfare, agriculture, dairy development etc.
