Corridors

Walkways have significant pedestrian traffic capacity, but the provision of too narrow walkways should be avoided because of human factors and user convenience considerations. Corridor is defined as circulation space enclosed by full height walls or partition over 5’ 9”. Aisle is a circulation space created by furniture or equipment.

  1. Minimum corridor width for egress must be 44” clear and with no obstructions or projections
  2. Two persons walking abreast require a width of 5 ft (1.5 m) to walk comfortably.
  3. For every additional 3.00 mts. length or part there of the width of corridor shall be increased by 0.15 mts. upto a maximum of 3.00 mts.
  4. In case of all non-residential and high rise residential buildings. The clear width of stair and lending exclusive of parapet shall not be less than 1.5 Mts.
  5. The stair-case & lifts (elevators) shall be so located that it shall be within accessible distance of not more than 25 Mts. from any entrance of tenement or an office provided on each floor.
