The flooring often set the tone and feeling of a room either as the dominant feature or as a neutral setting for furnishing and decorating elements. It is not only contributes to a room’s appearance but also affects comfort. But on attractive flooring do involve basic information on adoption of some of the elements of design and principles of design, which are discussed in the fallowing.

  1. How to achieve a good design of flooring:
  2. Interior design is the selection and arrangement of elements to create an attractive and comfortable living environment. Creation of a design depends on the decision about how to use a room i.e purpose of a room or function of a room. Based on this, a style can be developed corresponding to the use. For instance a bed room for calming and restful, a dinning for comfortable and inviting and entertaining guest, children’s room as a play room, and a kitchen as functional, safe, organized. Based on these, flooring can be highlighted as a dominating design or as a receding in corresponding with other elements of interior.

  3. Styles in flooring:
  4. Generally Styles are formal or informal and traditional or modern. Formal style characterized by symmetrical pattern straight lines, angles and geometrical figures. Informal styles are based on curves, asymmetrical patterns and neutral form. Within these styles designs can be relate to eras, places or architecture. For instance Romen, mosaic art, medieval, originally created in terrazzo flooring in Europe. To conform to the styles in flooring choice of flooring material may have to be limited.

  5. Principles of colors in flooring:
  6. Color is the powerful design element. When we enter a room color affects our feeling. Usually lower value (darker colors) of flooring makes the room appear smaller, while lighter color make a room appear larger. Color, texture, pattern and scale work together to create a floor design that either dominates the room or form the background for other elements.

  7. Form and pattern in flooring:
  8. Form refers to the physical shape of the flooring material such as square, strips, and rectangle. Pattern refers to a decorative motif on the surface of the flooring. Generally these indicate the style of flooring. So form and pattern are closely related in flooring materials.

  9. Role of scale in flooring:
  10. Irrespective of shape of flooring its size should be proportional to the room size and dimensions to maintain balance. So also the size of the pattern should fit the room size because it will make the room look larger or smaller. Larger and crowded pattern make the room to look smaller while smaller motif or patterns make a room to look larger.

  11. Textural effect of flooring:
  12. Although comfort, durability and functionality of the flooring material are the general concern but consideration of texture is also important because it affects the ambience of a room. Rough, uneven and crude texture of handmade flooring material can give natural appearance to a room, while delicate smooth and glazed surface may bring formal effect to a room. Wide range of textural affect in floor covering (carpets and rugs) can be find. Texture also affects safety for instance slippery surface is dangerous at entrance, kitchen and in both rooms while roughened surface helps to prevent slippery on a wet surface. Also texture of flooring material i.e smooth surface is easy to sweep and mop than rough surface. on style or period. Therefore, flooring needs consideration of factors while selecting the flooring materials
