Housing Values

Values: Values are modes of organizing conduct – meaningful, effective, invested pattern principles that guide human action. Housing decisions are taken purely on the basis of set values of the family. These are number of values that give guidelines to understand what people look for in the selection of home for dwelling.

  • Safety: People prefer to buy a house in or well developed area where safety is assured.
  • Comfort: People prefer to save on the initial cost of the house by purchasing house in the city outskirts, but spend more on comfortable size and designs of the house.
  • Privacy: It is the ability of an individual or group to keep their lives and personal affairs out of public view, or to control the flow of information about themselves. Privacy is the ability of an individual or organization to reveal oneself selectively.
  • Family Centrism: This value is found where there is close unity and integrity among family members. Family is relatively self-sufficient when it has place for Family Unity.
  • Hygiene: It is the hygienic means of preventing human contact from the hazards of wastes to promote good health of family members.
  • Convenience: Organized space with the intention to minimise time and effort. It is an effort intended to save time or frustration.
  • Aesthetics: This value is found where people emphasize simplicity, orderliness, harmony and beauty.
  • Equality: Where this value is held, people tend to be sensitive to and respect the needs and rights of others.
  • Economy: People who primarily emphasize on economical way of life tend to value thriftily use of goods and services.
  • Social prestige: People who have a great desire for the attention and respect of their peers and will adopt whatever symbols seem appropriate in achieving this goal.
  • Freedom: One who holds personal freedom wants to make as many of decisions to express their personal views in home making.
  • Leisure: A person who values leisure tends to emphasize freedom as well as privacy for quiet activities such as reading or listening to music.
  • Mental health: This value is found in people who seek primarily peace of mind controlling the environment or adjusting it in order to reduce anxiety, frustration and other conflicts.
  • Physical health: One who values health tends to make decisions to ensure well – being of all family members and safety.
