Irrigation and weeding
Irrigation
- In areas of low rainfall, irrigation is a must. In most areas in India,
- where it is grown as an irrigated crop, watering is done at fortnightly intervals, usually during the period from the middle of September to the middle of November.
Weeding
- Usually, two to three weedings are done in the whole of the growing period.
- The first weeding is done just before mulching and then repeated at monthly intervals, depending on the intensity of weed growth.
- The application of 2,4-D has been found to be effective as a pre-emergent herbicide.
- Manual weeding consists of either pulling out the weeds, chopping with a hoe or cutting the roots with a knife.
