Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)

SMALL INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH (SIBO)

  • An increased number of bacteria in the small intestine causes small intestinal dysfunction
  • Almost any bacteria may be responsible
  • SIBO differs from colonization of the alimentary tract by known pathogenic bacteria with virulence factors (i.e., Salmonella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, etc.) or overgrowth of toxigenic Clostridium perfringens in the colon.
