Lesson 8:Observation methods of evaluating young children

Sociometry

  • It is designed by Moreno and Jennings (1952).
  • It is a measure of social distance.
  • According to Jennings, sociometry is a means of presenting simply and graphically the entire structure of relations existing at a given time among members of a given group.
  • The major lines of communication are made comprehensive at a glance.
  • It consists of designating a meaningful choice situation.

Example: With whom would you like to work/play/visit? And ask children to name the person or persons, in the order of their preference- designating the child they would like to play with.

  • It involves peer rating rather than rating by supervisors. It adds another dimension to the understanding of social relationships. The common techniques under sociometry are
Sociomatrix and Sociogram.

The following example of a socio matrix/ sociogram can be given as link
