Readiness/pre-academic instruments

  1. Basic School Skills Inventory-Diagnostic (BSSI-D):
    • It is used as norm referenced and criterion referenced instrument.
    • The purpose is to identify both general and specific academic skills that might need remedial attention
    • Suitable for 4- 7.5 year old children.
  2. Boehm test of Basic concepts – Revised (Boehm-R):
    • It is a group administered instrument designed to measure child’s mastery of concepts necessary for successful performance early in school.
    • Suitable for kindergarten first and second grade children.
    • It is used to identify children who have problems in the tested area and to identify specific concepts that need to be taught.
  3. Bracken Basic concept scale:
    • It is designed for children in the age group of 2.6 years to 7 years.
    • It has two scales –
      • Diagnostic scale which takes 20-30 minutes
      • Screening test designed for 5-7 year old children. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete the test.
  4. Assessment log and developmental progress chart - preschool:
    • It measures five major domains- cognition, communication, social adaptation, fine motor and gross motor.
    • It divides the associated curriculum into major domains and teaching sequences.
    • It also helps in completion of developmental progress chart to provide profile of skills.
  5. First grade screening test: kindergarten to first grade.
    • Covers vocabulary and language areas.
    • Used to identify children at risk.
  6. Gesell School Readiness Test:
    • For 4.5-9 year old children.
    • The child is required to copy and write, manipulate cubes, name animals,, identify left and right, answer basic interview questions, demonstrate visual memory skills.
